Our Little Secret
Isn’t youth wonderful? Ignorance truly is bliss.
I recently heard an Obama representative crediting the winning campaign to throngs of young people hitting the streets to drum up votes. She said it was great because they went after it with their whole hearts. Apparently, no one had informed them that a Black man could never be elected President of the United States.
That’s kind of like what’s happening with the USC men’s team. With four sophomores and a freshman starting, it’s like no one told them that they shouldn’t be anywhere near the NCAA Finals.
And the way they got there? It’s clear that no one mentioned that you can’t lose twice to the number one team in the regular season and then beat them in three games on their home floor in the conference semis. But even if you could, you certainly couldn’t come back two days later and knock off the number two team in the country when they have arguably the best player in the nation on the other side.
But let’s say through some miracle, these youngsters could pull all that off. Well, they couldn’t show up at their school’s first Final Four in 18 years and take out the defending national champs, making them play like they just met each other that morning in the process.
Could they?
Well they did. Now they are one game away from the national title. All they have to do is beat that same number one team again. You know, twice in two weeks. Even though they may have awakened a sleeping giant and given it a thirst for revenge.
Maybe we should tell them that UCI isn’t likely to want to go out like that. Maybe we should let these young Trojans know that they could very well be in for a grudge match the likes of which they have never seen. Maybe we should let them know that a national championship is just not going to happen until they get some seniors on the court.
On second thought, maybe we should keep all that to ourselves. Let them stay in the dark on this one. It is certainly more fun this way.
