It may still technically be summer, but women's teams have gathered, whistles are blowing and double days are upon your favorite teams which means it is just about time for the Fall college season to begin. It is way too early for drama, but nonetheless we have a little of it already.
The Big Ten welcomes Nebraska into the conference for the first time this season which means Penn State's road to the conference championship is much tougher. There seems to be no love lost between the head coaches either based on the war of words they've already started in the media.
The pre-season poll came out this week and not surprisingly Penn State is No. 1. I'm not sure it is possible to pick against the Nittany Lions after Russ Rose pulled off an unprecedented four titles in a row despite a sub-par regular season last year. Again, they've lost some key players but that hasn't stopped them yet.
Rose told a reporter that he believes Nebraska is the team to beat. Cornhusker head coach John Cook accused Rose of sandbagging to which Rose apparently took offense. Cook continues to make a name for himself as sort of a rabble-rouser after last year's near brawl with Washington head coach Jim McLaughlin at the conclusion of a hotly contested playoff match. It is doubtful that the unflappable Rose will take the bait, but this budding conference rivalry will be fun to watch.
USC, Cal and Texas are the other three teams ranked ahead of Nebraska in the national poll. Stanford comes in at No. 6. You can check out the rest of the rankings on the AVCA website.
