NCAA Men: Third No. 1 in Four Weeks

By February 21, 2012

Follow me on:

There's another new No. 1 in town according to the AVCA Poll. This week, the position belongs to Stanford after a very impressive win over former No. 2 UCI. Stanford becomes the third No. 1 team in the last four weeks. BYU fell after the Stanford losses and UCLA, the No. 1 team of the last two weeks, lost in five to what had been a struggling Long Beach squad last week.

BYU had a strangely difficult time beating Cal Baptist this week. The Cougars had to fight back from being down 0-2 before they turned it on and won the next three sets. They beat Cal Baptist the next night in four sets. Despite the near-miss, BYU remains No. 3 in the poll.

The big moves in this week's poll went to UCSB jumping three spots to No. 12 after taking care of Northridge in three.  Northridge fell four spots to No. 15 after the loss.

This week we can look forward to the Stanford-USC match, the Lewis-Ohio State match and the UCI-Long Beach match. It should be telling to see how UCI bounces back and if Long Beach can keep up the recent good results.

Here are the rest of your matches to watch this week:

Wednesday, February 22nd
No. 15 CSUN @ No. 4 UCI

Thursday, February 23rd
No. 8 Ohio State @ No. 7 Lewis

Friday, February 24th

No. 12 UCSB @ No. 3 BYU

Saturday, February 25th

No. 12 UCSB @ No. 3 BYU
No. 6 USC @ No. 11 Pacific
No. 8 Ohio State @ No. 14 Loyola-Chicago
No. 10 Pepperdine @ No. 11 Pacific
