It was not nearly as dramatic as what happened in college football last weekend, but volleyball had a little shake up of its own nonetheless. No. 1 Stanford's 22-match win streak was snapped as they suffered their first loss since early September. A lackluster performance against No. 8 USC ended in a four set victory for the Trojans.
The Cardinal did manage to turn it around and beat the Bruins in four the next night so they fell just one spot in the AVCA Coaches Poll to No. 2 this week. With the upset, USC climbed four spots to No. 4, their first week back in the top five in nearly two months.
Waiting patiently in the wings for just this kind of let down from Stanford was Penn State. After beating Purdue in four sets they return to the No. 1 spot for the first time in four weeks. In the last weekend of regular season play, the Nittany Lions will host No. 14 Ohio State.
Other upsets this week included previously No. 14 Minnesota beating previously No. 9 Nebraska in five sets. Minnesota rose three spots to No. 11 and Nebraska fell one spot to No. 10. Previously No. 13 BYU also lost to previously No. 18 University of San Diego. That might have helped USD, had they not lost to unranked San Diego State in four just a few nights earlier. USD fell one spot to No. 19 while BYU fell three spots to No. 16.
Some of the top teams are off this weekend after playing in their conference championship tournaments. But there are still some good matches on the docket in this last week before the start of the playoffs. No. 4 USC will head to No. 7 UCLA to see if they can avenge their football loss from last weekend. UCLA will also take on No. 6 Oregon in Eugene.
