It has been 38 years since the job of head coach of the UC Santa Barbara women's team has been open. But as of Monday, Kathy Gregory, the only coach that program has ever known, stepped down and says the time has come to pass the torch of leadership.
Kathy was a great player herself in both indoor and beach volleyball with a long and illustrious sand career that landed her in the Hall of Fame. Her career at Santa Barbara includes 27 NCAA Tournament appearances and three appearances in the Elite Eight (1997, 1999, 2000.) She finishes her career with 882 wins and a .681 winning percentage, the highest among the university's coaches in any sport.
The seven-time Big West Coach of the Year will be part of a committee to choose her successor. Kathy is truly one-of-a kind. It's the end of an era not only for the Gauchos, but for the sport itself. Congratulations to Kathy for an incredible career on the court and on the sidelines.
