Longer FIVB Beach Season Could Lead to U.S. Events

By January 22, 2013

Follow me on:

Believe it or not, we could finally see some international pro beach volleyball events in the U.S. as early as this upcoming season. We've been waiting to see what new FIVB President Ary Graça would  do to change things up and it seems that one of his new plans could actually make it possible to have an Swatch World Tour event here in the States.

According to Box Score, Graça and the FIVB decided in meetings last week that we will see a longer beach volleyball season in 2013 that could span all the way through December. The longer season along with reduced criteria for hosting an official event should lead to opportunities for smaller countries to hold tournaments this season.

Word is that there will be tournaments on every continent and that smaller countries like Peru, Qatar and Uganda will be able to bid for host duties. It could also mean that larger countries like USA which have been  left off of the tour schedule for years could get an event on the calendar.

Fresh new tournaments featuring our American teams in competition with international pairs just like we see in the Olympics would be a great way to garner some new excitement for beach volleyball here at home. Here's hoping this happens, and soon.
