March of 2012 was a somber month for volleyball as several from our community passed on. I reported on the death of Italian silver medalist Vigor Bovolenta among others at the end of that month.
Bovolenta, 37, was playing with his professional team when he collapsed on the court. He was pronounced dead at the hospital later that night. Doctors said that the cause of death was an apparent heart attack at that time. Now it appears that Bovolenta's doctors may have been culpable in his death.
Two sports doctors cleared Bovolenta to compete. Both were charged with manslaughter after it was determined that Bovolenta had coronary artery disease and should not have been playing.
In tribute to their fallen teammate, the Italian men's team took Bovolenta's jersey onto the podium with them and held it up as they were awarded the bronze medal at the London Olympics.
