NCAA Men: BYU Keeps Top Spot, UCI Regains Footing

By January 29, 2013

Follow me on:

The top-ranked BYU Cougars were off last weekend and remain in the No. 1 spot this week in the AVCA poll. They'll jump back in the mix this week with home matches against No. 7 Long Beach State and No. 9 Northridge this weekend.

UCI put a stop to their recent losing streak with wins over those same opponents last week. The Anteaters beat Long Beach State in four and Northridge in five. With the wins they climb back up the ranks to the No. 2 spot this week. This week they faced off on the Pac-12 Network with former head coach John Speraw for the second time this season and were again victorious in five sets.

After losing their first two matches of the season down in LA, Stanford is also back on track. They beat UCLA in four and UC Santa Barbara in three last week to rise one spot to No. 3 in the nation. Coach John Kosty is trying out a two libero system that seems to be working well so far.

The Cardinal will travel to Hawaii for two matches this weekend. Last week, the unranked Warriors took down then No. 2 Pepperdine twice, in five sets and three sets. Pepperdine fell two spots to No. 4 this week. Stanford lost to Pepperdine two weeks ago, so these matches in Hawaii should be interesting indeed. Pepperdine has a big match against No. 8 USC this weekend in Malibu.
