January in Review

By January 31, 2013

Follow me on:

After the post Christmas lull wore off, men's volleyball came into full swing. UCI took the top spot early but fell in the rankings after a three game losing streak. That bump in the road opened the door for Taylor Sander's BYU Cougars to pounce. The month ends with BYU in the top spot and UCI back in the No. 2 spot after a nice recovery.

There were some key retirements as both Kathy Gregory, long time UC Santa Barbara coach  and Jonas Reckermann, London gold medal winning beach player from Germany decided to call it quits.

Collegiate sand volleyball got some key additions this month as Nebraska, Arizona, UCLA and Stanford joined the party. Sand volleyball continues to grow and these adds should make for a more competitive spring season.

In international beach, the FIVB decided to lengthen the season and cast a wider net, allowing for more countries to host events in 2013. The preliminary calendar says that there will actually be a tournament in the U.S. this year. Right now a dual gender grand slam event is tentatively scheduled for July 23rd-28th in Long Beach. I'll post the official calendar when it is finalized.

Lastly, May is a long way away. If you want to warm your January with some stories of national championships past, I put together all the articles from the last three NCAA championships on both the men's and women's sides from 2010-2012. Enjoy, and I'll see you back here in February.
