My Men's NCAA Final Four Picks

By April 17, 2013

Follow me on:

I'm not great at predictions. My March Madness bracket this year was a mess. And as unpredictable as that playoff was, men's volleyball may be the most unpredictable sport of them all. But why let that stop me? Predictions are fun, so here are mine.

I think there's a decent chance that BYU gets upset in the MPSF Conference Tourney. But that doesn't matter. They will be in the Final Four as the at-large bid if they don't win there. The question is, which of the other MPSF teams will make it?

I think three teams have a shot at the second spot - UCI, Long Beach State and UCLA. Any one of those teams could catch fire and win the tournament. My money is on the defending champs, UCI.

In the midwest it will come down to Lewis, Loyola-Chicago and Ball State. Though Ball State just beat Lewis and is on a 12-match win streak, I give the slight edge to Lewis in a re-match, but it won't be easy. There are going to be some great battles in that conference tournament, so keep an eye on those guys. The easy choice on the East Coast is Penn State.

So there you have it - BYU, UCI, Lewis, Penn State. May the best team win.

Why is Penn State the “easy choice” for the EIVA?

Penn St. lost to Harvard and, went five with others, and had some tough four-game matches with others. They’re probably the favorite, but it’s not nearly as clear this year as in years past.

I agree with you, it is not as easy at it has been in the past. They’ve had some bad losses and close calls. But PSU is 11-1 in conference. That loss to Harvard was their only misstep and I think they just had a bad night. It happens. I could be totally wrong, but I don’t think they’re going to let that happen again.
