Championship Cup Found!
Dated: 10/17/98Three weeks ago, Cuba Federation president, Leonel Marshall has yet to produce the solid silver cup due to be presented in Japan in ceremonies on November 12. The Cuban president, appearing at the championship lot drawing, claimed he forgot to bring it and would send it at a later date. Marshall denies the cup is lost and claims it is in "prime condition." To help persuade Cuba to quickly return the cut, the FIVB has frozen the countries prize earnings, estimated at US$300,000, and threatened sanctions. Cuba has held the cup since their victory at the World Championships in Brazil four years ago.
Finally, they found the cup. Reuters news wire reported that the silver trophy was found in the family home of one of the championship team's players. The cup is reportedly damaged and will travel to FIVB home of Lausanne for restoration before next month's games in Japan. Failing to give details, the FIVB reported that the cup was found in the home of a player who was out of the country playing volleyball in Italy. The cup had traveled to each of the players' home provinces so that they could present the trophy to their home town.
So now you know.
