Basic Skills

An introduction

By John Thomas, About.com

If you are just being introduced to the world of volleyball, then there are a number of skills you will need to develop in order to play well. Volleyball is not the type of sport where you can simply apply brute force and succeed. There are a number of skills that may seem slightly unnatural at first. As such, put in the time and practice each of these skills; they each have their own benefits and only when you acquire proficiency in all of them will you be a well-rounded player.

Passing

As the most important skill in volleyball you should devote a lot of time to practicing your passing skills. A good passer makes the rest of the game run smoothly and without one or many, your team will truly struggle.

Hitting

Hitting is the favorite activity for most players. It is fun, exciting, and, if you do it well, will bring you more praise than any other thing on the court.

Setting

Good setting is key if players are to be able to hit the ball effectively. Setting is also a valuable skill to have when passing.

Blocking

A good defensive is the best offense and a strong block can neutralize even the best opposing hitters.

Serving

A well-placed serve can throw an opposing team way off track due to shanked balls or bad passes. Take the time to improve your serving and you will be a valuable to any team.
