Judging Player Success

Is it just improvement or something more?

From Thomas Houser, for About.com

Now let us talk about player improvement. First, by doing the things I talked about with coaching success, each player will be at so many practices that her skills WILL improve. There is no doubt.

Second, let us look at our players and their lives...there are many things we as coaches don't have control over...their health, mood, rest, what they wear to practice, how many piercing they have, their grades, their family emergencies, etc. However, there are MANY things we cannot control and this is what I have told every team I have coach for 15 years. "I will decide how hard we work. I will decide how long practice is. You will not decide these things. I will decide what drill we perform, how long it lasts, and when I am satisfied. In addition, if I am not happy, we will do it again. In addition, we will do it again...until I am satisfied. This is not a democracy. There is no equal representation here. I am sorry, but that is the way it is. If you are concerned about your team's effort, take charge of it. It is within your control. About requiring more effort at practice...I encourage you NOT to holler
