As a coach it is important to know what to look for in a Libero. It may be tempting to simply throw the smallest guy on the team into this position in order to get him some playing time. However, the politics of playing time aside, it is important to use the Libero position to its full potential. It is a great asset to any and every team.

So what should you look for?

A Great Passer

This is the position's primary role so make sure the player can fulfill it.

One Who Can See the Court Well

A great Libero is one who can anticipate where the opposing team's setter is going to set the ball and adjust his position on the court accordingly. Being in the correct position prior to a dig or a pass is just as important as being able to physically pass the ball.

A Strong Leader

The Libero can be just as important as the setter in terms of guiding the rest of the team and making sure that the team's defense is organized and structured. An air-tight defense is critical in volleyball and it will not come together unless someone is there to lead.
