How To Get the Most Out of Summer Camp

From Dave Cross

“I didn't learn anything at that camp!”

When I hear this statement I cringe! Anyone who knows the game of volleyball and how camps are run will knows that all camps are not created equal. Some are better than others, just like in life. But, no matter which camp you go to, this is the bottom line: You get out of a camp what you put into it!

The key is to bring the best out of the coaches working with you.

Follow these simple steps and see how well your next game goes:

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: no time required, just change your behaviors

Here's How:

  1. Ask for extra help during breaks or before/after camp each day. - Every coach loves a player who wants to work extra. Why sit around doing nothing when you can be receiving one-on-one instruction? Get there early, stay late - no coach worth a hoot will turn you down - and if by some chance one does- simply ask another!
  2. Always, always hustle! - Another coach favorite. If they like the effort you put out- they'll put out more effort themselves - that’s just human nature!
  3. Ask questions when you donut understand. - This shows you want to learn. And again you'll receive one-on-one instruction when getting your answer.
  4. Always listen quietly when being instructed. - Coaches really appreciate those that pay attention - and donut talk when being talked to. Besides, it's simply rude to do otherwise and many camp coaches will just “turn you off” if you aren't listening.
  5. Keep a cheerful disposition throughout each day. - More human nature here - everyone likes interacting with happy people more that the opposite - coaches are no different!

Tips:

  1. Although many will probably go to camp this summer and follow these steps only when they feel like it - the only ones who really will get the most out of their camp time this summer are those that make it a point to do their best to do each of the above steps all the time.
  2. Remember: Its up to you to get the most out of camp. Give my suggestions a try. Not only will you help yourself to learn more, you'll be practicing skills you're own coach back home will love next fall, too!
  3. Good luck and have fun !!
