The Essential Gear That You Will NeedA convenient facet of volleyball is that you really only need one thing in order to play: a ball. It is incredibly practical to be able to simply get a partner and pepper back and forth. Beyond that, you will find that much of the gear used in volleyball is used because of the personal preference of the individual player. NetsIf you play on an organized team or at the beach, purchasing a net is not something that you will have to worry about. However, if you do purchase a net it is important that the net is durable and strong. Through most levels of play, balls are frequently hit into the net. As such, make sure that your net will be able to hold up to the punishment it will receive. ShoesIf you are playing beach volleyball, then you will not need to worry about wearing shoes. In fact, I recommend not wearing shoes when playing at the beach. They are cumbersome and awkward in the sand. When playing indoor volleyball, a good pair of shoes is a great asset. The market for shoes specifically made for volleyball is still relatively small, though it has improved in recent years. A lot of players turn to cross-trainers when they are unable to find a suitable pair of volleyball shoes. Regardless of which type of shoe you decide to go with, make sure that the shoes feel comfortable and supportive while moving laterally and while jumping. Knee PadsThe use of knee pads is entirely dependent upon personal preference. No position needs to wear knee pads - even many Liberos prefer to not wear them. That said, players in certain positions will generally find them to be a valuable asset while players in other positions do not feel any need for them. Middle blockers should ideally spend very little time on their knees and knee pads are therefore not necessary. On the other hand, the odds of a back row player needing to fall on their knees are much higher. Which knee pads you choose is a matter of comfort. The bubble knee pads tend to be quite cumbersome. They also move out of position quite easily and need consistent readjustment. The skinny knee pads are much more efficient and manageable. Ankle BracesWhen playing beach volleyball, ankle braces are not necessary. It is not likely that you will injure your ankle when playing in the sand. Conversely, when playing indoor volleyball, ankle braces are very much essential to your ability to stay free from injury. There is some debate as to which type of ankle brace is most effective. Lace-up style ankle braces and taping your ankles are very similar in the amount of support they offer and in their effectiveness to prevent injury. The Active-Ankle style braces offer much firmer support for your ankle, but could possibly put greater strain on your knee. Ankle injuries are very common in volleyball. Regardless of which type of ankle brace you choose, it is highly probable that you will injure your ankle eventually. However, your risk of a serious injury is much higher if you do not wear them. |
