The Importance of Water

As an athlete it is imperative that you stay properly hydrated. Water is necessary for muscle recuperation and good blood circulation. Without maintaining proper water intake you could become dehydrated. Dehydration can lead to headaches, decreased blood pressure, dizziness, or fainting. Fortunately, staying hydrated is simple if you pay attention to what you take in.

That being said, proper hydration is more than simply drinking enough while practicing. It begins long before you even step on the court. You need to maintain proper hydration during the day, before practice, and after practice. Doing so will ensure that you are sufficiently hydrated when you need it.

Sports drinks are necessary only under certain situations. Sports drinks, such as Gatorade or Powerade, contain carbohydrates and electrolytes which can help replenish energy supplies. However, sports drinks are only really necessary for vigorous exercise that lasts longer than 60 minutes. For all other exercise water is sufficient.

For longer events such as tournaments or long practices, it is wise to start with water and add in sports drinks as the event progresses. It is not necessary to cut out water completely; use sports drinks to supplement your water intake.

Tips

  • Drink frequently during practice
  • Drink approximately 15 oz. of water an hour or two before practice
  • Avoid caffeine as much as possible
