When NOT to Miss a Volleyball Serve

Avoid the Three Cardinal Sins of Serving

By Beverly Oden, About.com

Most of the time, you should be going for a tough volleyball serve. But there are three moments during a game when it is more important to get the ball in play rather than go for an ace. This does not mean that you should serve an easy, underhand lob, but rather that you should play it a little safer and concentrate a little harder. At these times, you NEVER miss.

  1. First serve of a game or set
The first serve needs to be in-bounds so you can get your team off to a good start. Missing the first serve can set a bad tone for the rest of the game.

  2. Game point
If you or the other team is on the brink of winning the game, you need to make sure to get the ball in play giving your team the chance to win or making their team earn their last point. Missing at this time makes for a very anti-climactic ending for both teams and anyone watching.

  3. After a time out
If you score several points on your serve, the other team will likely call a time out to break your rhythm. When you return to the court, get the ball in play. Miss now and you play right into their hands and let your opponents off the hook.
