2013 NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament
The NCAA Tournament in women's volleyball brought quite a bit of parity in 2013. Because of that, we saw lots of surprises in the tournament this year. In the end, the title went to a perennial powerhouse, but there were many surprises.

Strong Conferences, Weak Conferences
One thing the 2013 Tournament has shown us is that a weak conference schedule spells disaster in the playoffs. Here is a look at this year's strongest conferences and how they are faring, and a look at what happened to teams from weaker conferences.

2013 NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament Bracketology
Sunday’s NCAA Selection Show revealed the 64 teams that will compete in this year’s women’s volleyball tournament along with the teams it chose for the top 16 seeds. Usually, there is much dispute over which teams end up where. This year, I think that with a few exceptions, the way the chips fell in 2013 is a pretty good reflection on the season. While there is no easy road to the Final Four, here are my thoughts on the upcoming tournament, the toughest and easiest pools and the teams that could shake things up if the top seeds aren’t careful.

2013 NCAA Women's Volleyball Road to the Regional

David Kniffin Takes the Reigns in Irvine
David Kniffin took over the head coaching job from his very successful predecessor John Speraw who went on to coach at UCLA. For UCI, the best replacement for the coach that put the program on the map was all about fit.

Kniffin Eyes Back-to-Back Titles
Now that David Kniffin is heading up the defending national champions at UCI, he's turned his attention to building a strong unit by building a close relationship to his players as individuals and not just volleyball players. The team's quest to win back-to-back titles is at the forefront, but Kniffin is molding his identity in his first head...

The Ankle Injury that Ended Coley Kyman's Career
Coley Kyman believes that the ankle injury that he suffered while playing college football 20 years ago, would not have been as severe had he not been wearing an ankle brace at the time. A Texas woman is suing because she injured her ankle in much the same way. Read Coley's story and weigh in on the ankle brace debate. Do they help or hurt?

Tufts Student Athletes Punished for Heckling Volleyball Players
Tufts officials punished 27 lacrosse players who harassed female volleyball players during a match against Smith College last season. Heckling is common place in sports. When does it cross the line?

Heckling in Volleyball - Hecklers in Sports - When Does Heckling Become...
Heckling is commonplace in sports and athletes are trained to ignore it and focus on their play. But recently the Tufts lacrosse team took things too far when they hurled racist and sexually explicit comments at the visiting Smith College women's team. The lacrosse team was punished, but it brings up a question. When does heckling cross the line...

A Look Back at Stanford's First National Championship
Twenty years ago, Stanford women's volleyball won its first ever national championship. It came in the most improbable of ways and was one of the biggest upsets in women's volleyball history. Here are some of my memories of that very special year and that very special team.

How Stanford Earned the No. 1 Ranking
In the midst of massive forty-day road trip, the Stanford men's team has managed to put some very impressive W’s in their record. First came the two wins over former No. 1 BYU and last weekend came the very impressive 3-0 win over former No. 2 UCI.

An Open Discussion of Title IX
I was able to discuss the pros and cons of Title IX with an outspoken opponent in Olympian and broadcaster Kevin Barnett and an outspoken opponent in AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. What I found out was that the two sides do have common ground, but we disagree when it comes to what to do next. These are my takeaways from that discussion.

NCAA's New Play-In Match Format
The NCAA has changed the way that men's volleyball teams will qualify for the final four and national championship. The idea is to expand the tournament, which is a good goal and could lead to growth in the sport. But they way in which they've done it could hurt some teams who now have to find the money to travel to an extra match in order to qualify for the final four. Is this the right solution?

2013 NCAA Women Road to the Final Four
The 2013 season has been another difficult to predict year. Though defending champions Texas looks like the frontrunner for the national championship this year, it won't be an easy road. Penn State is a close second and the could make another run for a title. Also in the top five at the end of the regular season - Stanford, Missouri and Washington.

2013 Final Four Preview
The 2013 Final Four should see the top two teams in the nation face off in the national final. Expect No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Penn State to meet after taking out their semifinal opponents. But don't count out No. 3 Washington, who will be playing in it's hometown or No. 12 Wisconsin who topped the toughest Region in the bracket to make it to Seattle. This should be a hard-fought Final Four. Check out my predictions.

NCAA Sand Volleyball Needs A Mentality Shift
The ease of implementation is one of the reasons that sand volleyball is such an easy sell to colleges right now. It’s cheap. But we’re going to need to take it to the next level. And soon. It might be a bit of tough sell to a school that originally created the program because it was so inexpensive. Can schools be persuaded to dedicate more resources to the sport eventually?

Without the automatic berths from conference tournament championships, the entire process could be subjective and is likely to spark controversy no matter how it shakes out.
