Cover Your Hitter

Simply because a hit is blocked it does not mean the play is over. Most blocks are not roofs, which means that your team has another opportunity to play the ball. Properly covering the hitter will result in a lot of saves and second chances.

The key to covering the hitter is to create a sort of "umbrella" around the hitter. This will ensure that every angle is covered. Three players cover the area directly around the hitter, leaving the other two players to cover the blocks that go deep. Most blocks stay close to the net, so two players is more than sufficient to cover the deep balls.

One of the most difficult aspects of covering is getting other hitters to remember to do so. It is easy as a hitter to simply transition to blocking if you do not receive the set. Building the habit to cover other players is crucial to your success and the success of your team.
