So when the news came down that the Japanese Volleyball Association (JVA) let Sato go after less than a year at the helm, it felt a bit like an international incident.

Is Ary Graça Involved in Brazilian Federation Corruption Scandal?
Just after the news broke that the Korea Volleyball Federation was under investigation for corruption, another volleyball governing body met a similar fate this week. Unfortunately, this one has larger implications for the sport as a whole because it involves the current president of the international governing body. Ary Graça promised openness, transparency and a democratic process. And it seemed that he was taking steps toward making that happen in his first months in office. But now the national organization that he led for the last 17 years is under investigation for corruption.

Speraw named the 22-men that will be available for the tournament and the 2014 roster is a nice mix of youth and veterans that includes seven Olympians and three players who competed in NCAA volleyball this year. Up to 14 (including two designated liberos) can be utilized for each match so the roster could change from week to week as coaches evaluate the new young talent.

World League Week 1

World League: USA vs. Russia Preview
The USA men will host its first home matches of the 2014 World League Competition in Long Beach on June 6th and 7th. Russia is ranked No. 2 in the world while the U.S. is ranked No. 4. These should be tough matches for the Americans against the defending Olympic gold medalists. Here's a look at how the American squad matches up with the Russians on paper.

2014 World League Round Up
The 2014 World League competition, running from May 23rd-July 20th will feature a different format than in years past. There are five pools of four teams that will battle it out in the Intercontinental Round and then the top six teams will move on to the Final Round in Florence, Italy. This year there are two additional pools of four that will include lower ranked teams. The top two teams in those pools will head to a completely separate final round in Sydney, Australia. The USA men will play six matches in the U.S. against Russia in Long Beach, against Serbia in Chicago and against Bulgaria in Hoffman Estates, IL. Here you will find the schedule of matches, results, standings and updates on the competition as it unfolds.

Vol-B-Que 3 Sold Out
If you have not already purchase your Vol-B-Que tickets, you're out of luck. Matt Garthoff announced that the tailgate that will precede the USA vs. Russia World League match at the Pyramid in Long Beach is officially sold out. Actually, it's oversold and it's a huge step forward for the volleyball community.

What the Vol-B-Que Teaches Us About Volleyball Fans
Last Saturday in Long Beach the impossible happened. Strangely, it wasn't the first time. It was technically the third. But somehow in our little world of volleyball we get into the business of writing things off as flukes. But last Saturday's Vol-B-Que 3 was enough for us to take notice and realize something important. Volleyball fans may not suck as much as we may have previously believed.

World League Round Up Week 3
Italy continues to lead the way in the 2014 World League with six straight wins and a tournament high 18 points. They are the team to beat as the top-ranked teams in the world, No. 1 Brazil and No. 2 Russia are going with younger line ups that have not been able to log many wins thus far. The USA team is also sporting a young line up, especially since 3-time Olympian Reid Priddy went down with a knee injury in the second match of the tournament. But so far that has not hurt the Americans, who now sit in first place in Pool B after two wins over Russia gave them a 4-0 record with a total of 10 points.

World League: U.S. Men Become Sole Undefeated Team in Tournament

World League: USA Suffers First Loss, Iran Tops Italy
The USA men's team, the very last undefeated team in the 2014 World League competition, finally dropped a match over the weekend. The men split two matches with Bulgaria with just two weekends of play remaining in the preliminary round.

Female Fans and Journalists Banned from World League Matches in Iran
The Iranian men’s team scored a huge victory with two wins over perennial powerhouse Italy over the weekend in World League competition. The wins show that Iran can compete with some of the best teams in the world and that they are becoming a world class program. I wish that was the entirety of the World League news to come out of that country this week. But that good news was overshadowed by an incredible decision by the Iranian government to ban all women from attending World League matches.

World League: USA Looks to Clinch Spot in Final Round
The USA men continue to lead their World League pool and could clinch a spot in the 2014 World League Final round in Italy this weekend with just one win over Serbia. After splitting two matches with Russia last weekend, the men now have a record of 8-2. They need to remain in the top two in the pool to move on, so one win should be enough.

USA Women to Take on Brazil in Southern California
The USA women will compete on U.S. soil this weekend in what will hopefully be a preview of the 2016 Olympic gold medal match in Rio de Janeiro. The U.S. will host the first two of four matches against World No. 1 Brazil for the USAV Cup.

World League: USA Men Earn Spot in Final Round

USAV Cup: Women Win First Two Matches Vs. World No. 1 Brazil

Young Squad Leads U.S. to 2014 World League Title
When the American men set out over eight weeks ago for the preliminary round of the 2014 World League competition, expectations were not exactly high. Without several of the staples from the last few quads and with one of the few veterans, Reid Priddy, suffering an injury in the early going, even making the final round seemed questionable. No one would have predicted that this particular incarnation of the men's team could have the wherewithal to win the entire tournament. Yet that's exactly what they did.

USAV Teams Ahead of Schedule
You'd have to look long and hard to find a summer more successful than 2014 in USA Volleyball's history. The American indoor men winning World League, the indoor women beating No. 1 Brazil four straight times heading into the World Grand Prix. The No. 1 pairs in beach on both the men's and women's sides leading in victories. I certainly can't recall another time in history when the sailing has been this smooth in the middle of a quad.

USA Women Embark on 2014 Grand Prix
Just a few weeks after the USA men's team surprised everyone with a World League win, the women's team will try to do the same in their version of the same tournament, The World Grand Prix, which begins for the Americans this Friday, August 1st.

FIVB: 2014 World Grand Prix Schedule and Results

World Grand Prix: U.S. Women Have Work to Do in Week 2
The USA women's national team finished Week 1 of the 2014 World Grand Prix with a 1-2 record and just three points, which means they have quite a bit of work to do in the coming weeks to get back into the hunt for the Finals in Japan at the end of the month. The U.S. women currently sit in eighth place in the standings and since just four teams and the host country move on, they'll need to start climbing those ranks as soon as possible.

Grand Prix: U.S. Women Battle Back in Week 2

USAV Cup: USA Men Win First of Four Matches Against Iran
USC's Galen Center welcomed over 5,000 screaming and dancing fans last Saturday night when the USA men's national team took on Iran for the first of four USAV Cup matches to be held in Southern California in the month of August. Though most of the raucous crowd was screaming for the visiting team, the U.S. men managed to win in four sets, a couple of which were very tight battles. The final scores were 27-25, 25-21, 27-29, 25-17.
