A Time Line

  • 1924- Volleyball was played at the Summer Games as part of a demonstration of American sports.

  • 1964- Indoor volleyball became a part of the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.

  • 1972- Japan won the gold in indoor volleyball.

  • 1976- Poland introduced the back-row attacker and won the gold medal.

  • 1984- The U.S. defeated Brazil in the finals to win their first gold medal.

  • 1992- Beach volleyball was introduced to the games.

  • 1996- Beach volleyball became an official Olympic sport.

  • 1996- Charles "Karch" Kiraly and Kent Steffes (USA) won the first gold medal in beach volleyball.

  • 2000- The Libero was added as an official position at the Sydney, Australia Games.

  • 2000- Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana (USA) secured back-to-back gold medals for the U.S. in beach volleyball.

  • 2004- Brazil won its second gold medal in indoor volleyball; the first was won in 1992.

  • 2004- Ricardo Santos and Emanuel Rego (Brazil) secure the gold medal in beach volleyball.
