Is it against the rules to serve a volleyball with a closed fist?

From John Thomas, for About.com

Question: Is it against the rules to serve a volleyball with a closed fist?

Answer: Absolutely you can serve a volleyball with a closed fist. It is not against any of the rules; however, it is not the preferred method of overhand serving. Young players will often resort to trying to gain power and speed by using their closed fist. It certainly feels unnatural to them to try and hit something hard with an open fist. However, with proper training and practice, you can hit a ball just as hard and with a lot more control with an open hand.
