The Importance of PassingWhile it is true that most players want to spend their time hitting and blocking, it is imperative that younger players learn the importance of passing. Younger players are generally new to the game and it is important that a proper foundation is set. One aspect of this is that they learn what wins games and what is for show. That is not to say that hitting is not important, but, generally, the teams that are most successful are those which can pass most effectively. Also, it is important to note that usually without accurate passing, hitting effectively becomes nearly impossible. If a setter must chase balls across the court, it is difficult to place the ball exactly where it needs to be for a hitter. Similarly, even in the upper levels, but especially at the younger levels, it is very difficult to set a quick hitter, or middle blocker, around the ten foot line. So if players constantly pass the ball off the net the setter's options will be severely limited. In practices for younger players, there needs to be an emphasis placed on passing and digging. Drills which focus on the skills will go a long way to develop well-rounded players as they get older. Serve receive drills are one type which should be used frequently. They force the player to read the server and to move to the ball as needed. Controlled drills should be utilized as often as possible with younger players. As opposed to free play in a game type setting, drills focused on one particular skill will be much more effective. Such drills will allow the coach to control the tempo of the drill and to ensure that the drill does not become chaotic; "jungle ball" does not develop proper technique. Therefore, if your players want the glamour of pounding balls, teach them to pass accurately and consistently. |
