Fingers and Thumbs

By , About.com Guide

If you spend any time at all in the front row blocking, the news is not that good here. You can't expect to stick your hands up in front of a hitter with any power and expect not to jam some fingers every once in a while. This is a part of the game. Most of the finger jamming is temporary and will go away with time. However, there are chronic cases that lead to breaks and major damage on repeated injuries that could require surgery at some point.

If you are prone to finger injuries, you should get a tape job before every match and practice. Ask your trainer or physical therapist what the best course of action is. Many times, players will tape two fingers together to provide support and make the fingers less susceptible to injury.

These tape jobs are easy to do and you can do them on yourself. So once you've been taught how to best support your particular finger injury, make sure you bring some tape every time you play.
