UCLA was the top story, knocking off the #1 team -- Pepperdine. However, they also slipped up and maybe looked beyond their first match against Loyola Marymount early in the week, and that cost them, as the Lions knocked them off. If the Bruins had stayed focused, they just might have been the #2 or #3 team this week. As it is, they upset #1 and stayed #4 because of the loss to Loyola.
The important thing though is that they beat Pepperdine. That tells the Bruin players and much of the rest of the world, that they are for real and it sets up a very interesting MPSF tourney in the next two weeks.
Meanwhile, Long Beach State won their matches this week against both San Diego teams, which moved them back into the #1 spot.
Another BIG story this past week was Lewis. Lewis travelled over to Hawai'i and split with the Rainbows. While Hawai'i handled them easily in their first meeting, Lewis came back strong and surprised the Rainbows by winning the match. That win dropped Hawai'i one spot in the polls, but left Lewis in the same place as last week at #10. It was definitely a good trip to the Islands for the Flyers.
The rest of the matches went pretty much as expected as you will find out in this weeks newsletter. First though, as we usually do, let's start with a look at this week's Top 15 poll.
